| The word nêsiotika (island music) refers to the musical tradition of the Aegean islands, both collectively and individually. Contrary to this generic term’s implications of uniformity and lack of variation, however, Lesvos has a rich, vigorous, and varied musical tradition and repertoire that is very different from the rest of the Aegean, and is practically unknown beyond the island. Lesbos Aiolis is a collection of extraordinary recordings full of echoes of the rich musical life of Asia Minor, and Smyrna in particular. It captures the island’s musical experience over a period of seventy years (from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s), and reflects the complexity of the material and practices that created it, revealing a musical tradition that is, sadly, gradually disappearing.
